Mental Health in the Criminal Courts

Commissioner Travis Marderosian

Comm. Marderosian will discussion two separate areas in a criminal case where the court and mental illness overlap. In the pre-sentencing stages of a criminal case, Rule 11 proceedings are designed to ensure that one’s mental illness is not substantially interfering with their ability to competently stand trial. In the post-sentencing stages of a case, the Probation Mental Health (PMH) treatment court assists the SMI population with a team-based approach to medication compliance, psychiatric stability, and overall probation success.
