Internship Description

The Judicial Branch of Arizona in Maricopa County is the fourth largest general jurisdiction court system in the nation. The Judicial Branch is committed to providing access to justice for all people in the community.

Intern Position Functions

Interns will participate in workshops and seminars designed to provide an overview of the five areas of practice in the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County, in the Court Interpretation and Translation Services Department (CITS).

  • Language Interns will assist in case specific linguistic research and glossary creation and maintenance.
  • Language Interns will assist in service coordination tasks and internal interpreting training curriculum development.

Primary Duties

  • Participate in lectures, workshops, and assessments.
  • Shadow staff interpreters and assists in research and/or case preparation for complex hearings and events.
  • Assist trainer and supervisor in the preparation of practice sessions and assessments for staff interpreters, as needed.
  • Assist with clerical tasks in the preparation of daily assignment calendars and workload assignments.
  • Participate in the active practice of the three modes of interpretation and receives feedback on performance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Currently enrolled in the last year of a graduate or undergraduate translation/interpretation program (Spanish/English combination) OR
  • Have graduated from a graduate or undergraduate translation/interpretation program (Spanish/English combination) within the past 12 months OR
  • Have completed a Court Interpreter Professional Development program and have initiated the AZ certification program for a Tier 1 or 2 Credential

Preferred Candidate

Currently enrolled graduate student or bachelor’s degree seeking student with completion of at least two (2) years’ college level coursework in any field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Standard clerical practices related to filing, maintaining records, and research preparation.
  • The use of computer applications including spreadsheets, database and word processing software including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Communicate orally and in written form at a native or near native speaker level in both English and Spanish.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Operate a computer to enter and/or retrieve data.
