Victim Compensation

If you have been the victim of a crime, you may be able to apply for Victim Compensation paid by convicted felons. A victim may still apply for victim compensation, even if restitution is pending or ordered by the court. If it is determined that part of the expenses were ordered in restitution and paid by Victim Compensation, Victim Compensation can make a restitution claim against the defendant.

Types of Compensation

  • Lost wages due to injury or court appearances
  • Medical expenses and mileage to health appointments
  • Funeral expenses
  • Counseling costs

Eligibility Requirements

  • Victimized in Maricopa County
  • Report the crime within 72 hours
  • Willing to cooperate with law enforcement
  • Incur economic loss for the above expenses
  • Suffer physical injury
  • Suffer extreme mental distress
  • Crime results in the death of a family member
  • File an application within 2 years of the date of the crime

Compensation Will Not Cover

  • Property loss or damage
  • Pain and suffering
  • Expenses that would benefit an offender
  • Attorney fees
  • Anyone incarcerated, including house arrest and work furlough

Restitution

Restitution is a court-ordered payment to compensate victims, non-dischargeable through bankruptcy. The probation department has the jurisdiction to request restitution hearings.
