Commissioner Shellie Smith was a Master of the Law who Rarely Missed a Day
PHOENIX (January 16, 2025) – After 22 years of serving the residents of Maricopa County, Commissioner Shellie Smith retires from the Superior Court effective January 18th.
As a commissioner, she served in Initial Appearance, Probation Violation and Early Disposition Courts. Commissioner Smith spent the last six years overseeing Special Assignment calendars.
“Commissioner Smith has a remarkable work ethic,” said Presiding Judge Joseph Welty. “In fact, in a 22-year career, she rarely took a day off. She mastered the law, respected the people who appeared before her, and did the work of the court.”
Prior to her judicial appointment, Commissioner Smith served on both sides of the aisle as a prosecutor and public defender. She also worked as a solo practitioner.
Commissioner Smith earned her Juris Doctorate and bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University.
