Maintaining a secure courtroom environment is vital for upholding the integrity of the judicial process.

Training provided by the Judicial Branch Security Department prepares staff to create a safe environment for courtroom participants including staff, judges, lawyers, jurors, defendants, witnesses, and the public so justice can be carried out without intimidation or interference.

The physical design of courtrooms plays a crucial role in security. Modern courtrooms have secure entrances, surveillance systems, and separate waiting areas for all parties to minimize conflicts. Metal detectors and other screening devices are commonly used to prevent weapons from being brought into the courtroom. In high-profile cases or those involving potential threats, additional security measures, such as increased court security officers’ presence may be implemented.

The Judicial Branch Security Department provides training programs to Judicial Branch staff to increase safety and preparedness for all courtroom participants. As threats evolve, so too must the strategies and technologies used to secure courtrooms undergo continuous assessment and adaptation in courtroom security practices.

Emergency Evacuation Team Training provides the knowledge and skills to execute evacuation plans to minimize chaos and confusion during critical situations. When an emergency occurs, such as a fire, natural disaster, or security threat, staff are trained to evacuate quickly and systematically. The team’s preparedness for a swift and organized response is essential for protecting the public and preventing injuries and fatalities.

Active Shooter at the Workplace Training raises awareness about active shooter situations by teaching staff about the typical behaviors and patterns of active shooters so staff can better recognize early warning signs and take preventive actions to protect themselves and the public. This awareness is critical for creating a safer environment and potentially preventing a dangerous escalation of events. Active Shooter Training provides practical strategies and techniques for staff to deal with a shooter including how to identify safe escape routes, how to barricade oneself in a secure location, and, if necessary, how to counter the shooter. These skills empower staff to make swift, informed decisions under stress, which can significantly increase survival for everyone in the building.

Krav Maga Personal Defense Training teaches staff how to take quick and decisive actions to respond and neutralize threats quickly and efficiently by targeting vulnerable areas of the body and allowing staff to get away. Krav Maga also emphasizes situational awareness and stress management to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations, as well as to stay calm and make clear decisions under pressure. This mental training is as important as physical techniques because they help individuals maintain their composure during high-stress encounters.

Courtroom safety and security are critical aspects of the judicial system to ensure that justice is administered in a safe and orderly environment. Staff participate in annual training programs to learn practices and skills to protect themselves and the public for justice to be served without intimidation or interference.
